Rebuilding student’s look into architecture and town space, examining architectural space and town space from professional point of view, becoming aware of problems related to architectural space. Discussing the nature of interventions with personal space and urban space. Questioning transformation, renewal, (re)cretaion and sustainability of urban space.

 

MİM 102 BASIC DESIGN (2+2) 3

Improving skills and abilities of form giving and order. Introduction of geometry and abstraction, and their impacts on design, questioning the nature of design activity, introduction and discussions on the design topic and design object, and discussing the reasons behind design. Focusing on changes and transformations during the process of design from abstract and simple ideas to concrete and complex architectural forms.

 

MİM 103 ARCHITECTURAL GRAPHICS (2+2) 3

Undertaking tools and methods which can represent design ideas. Introduction of conventional methods and search for alternative approaches; two and three dimensional projection methods, scale, norms, freehand sketches, artistic representation.

 

MİM 104 INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURE I (4+0) 4

Introduction to architecture through relations of processes constituting architectural knowledge. Taking processes into consideration, which shape the evolution of architecture (ie. technical, aesthetical, economical, social, etc.). Introduction of phenomena shaping architectural design (environmental factors, cultural values, factors affecting human and society, etc.), areas of architectural knowledge; relations with arts, philosophy, history, sociology, history of civilization. Contemporary architecture, contextual relations of topography, environment, city, place. Function and use, ergonomics, scale, building components and techniques, basic structure systems.

General explanations on principles of computer systems. Hardware and software, programming and use of existing programs. Word processor, Excel, PowerPoint applications. General introduction to architectural programs, general commands of Sketch Up program.

Architectural terminology, translations from English to Turkish and Turkishto English, reading English texts focusing in architecture.

 

ATA 101 ATATÜRK’S PRINCIPLES AND REPUBLICAN REFORMS I (2+0) 0

Reasons preparing Republican era: Deterioration of Ottoman Empire, reforms in Ottoman period, ideologies in late Ottoman times (Religionalism, Westernisation, Turkish Nationalism), I. World War and its results. All levels of independence war, Mudanya and Lausanne Agreements.

 

MİM 201 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN II (8+4) 10

Forming an architectural problem and experiencing design process with different design tools. Discovery of solutions to the design problem and discussing the solutions offered. Description of design problem/topic, creation of solutions.

 

MİM 204 INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURE II (4+0) 4

The awareness on the importance and influence of factors like user, environment, and material in designing the spatial organization. The knowledge on the evolution of design concept. Basic information on the epistemological concept of design such as space, human, function, environment, and building technology.

 

MİM 206 CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS I (2+4) 4

Introduction to basic construction systems in architecture. Elementary knowledge of different structural systems and basic problems (ground types, foundations, drainage, insulation, earth retaining, floors, walls, windows, doors)

 

MİM 207 HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE I (3+0) 3

The roots, meaning, and necessity of art; presenting artistic forms through space-time relations, traditions, and individual style examples, stating ontological nature of art. Introduction of artistic and cultural systems of civilizations according to periods and styles; in parallel to interpretation of their architectural examples. Evaluation of art and architecture through history taking effects such as geographical conditions, structure of society, economical conditions, cultural environment into consideration. Art and architecture in Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. Egypt, Hittite, Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantium Civilizations; their art and architecture.

 

MAT 201 MATHEMATICS (2+0) 2

Numbers, complex numbers, absolute value, in-equations of absolute value functions, functions, resultant function, trigonometric function, continuity in functions, limits of functions, derivative, finding minimum and maximum and its applications, derivatives of closed and reversed functions, L’Hospital Rule and its applications.

 

YD 201 ENGLISH II (2+0) 0

Reaching to Intermediate level, practicing professional terminology and expressions, working with texts relevant to architecture and translation exercises. The course content includes simple present tense, future tense, comparisons, problems and recommendations, present perfect tense, different use of simple present tense and present continuous tense, particular linguistic structures, adjectives and adverbs.

 

ATA 201 ATATÜRK’S PRINCIPLES AND REPUBLICAN REFORMS II (2+0) 0

The nature of Ataturk’s thought. Political, social, and legal structures of the new Turkish Republic. Political reforms; rejection of imperial rule, declaration of the new republic and abolishing caliphate. Social reforms; secular government, changes in legal, educational and other systems. The targets and main constitutional goals of Turkish Republic. Economic systems and foreign policy in Atatürk period.

 

MIM 301 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN III (4+8) 8

Relations of architectural space, function, and form in a relatively simple design problem, acquiring skills and considerations on place and context relations.

 

MİM 305 COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN I (2+2) 3

Advanced applications of professional programs. Production of three dimensional representations with computer. Realistic rendering of three dimensional computer modeling.

 

MİM 306 CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS II (2+2) 3

Explanations on how to tackle with construction problems during architectural design process and exercises. Elementary knowledge on different construction systems and building components (stairs, ramps, elevators, roof systems).

 

MİM 307 HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE II (3+0) 3

Information on how cultural backgrounds of different societies could affect art and architecture. Introduction of artistic and cultural backgrounds of civilizations according to different periods and styles and interpretations of their architectural examples in parallel. Explanations of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, XVIIIth and XIXth century architectural examples in Europe and the States.

 

MİM 308 STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS (3+0) 3

General descriptions, basic information on how to evaluate structural problems during architectural design process. Concept of structural system, loads affecting structure systems, principles related to statics and load bearing capacity. Problems, equations of system equilibrium, moment diagrams. Providing information on how to deal with structural problems during architectural design process with necessary engineering skills. Problems about beams, columns, frames, arches, 2D and 3D space frames, calculations about steel rod dimensions. Deciding on the typology of forms in relation to loads affecting building components. Rational decisions about span dimensions.

 

YD 301 READING AND SPEAKING IN ENGLISH (2+0) 2

Course aims at giving English beginner grammar, writing, and communication skills. Students learn from simple to most complicated tenses, they can introduce themselves, talk about events and objects which they like and dislike, and what they enjoy doing during their spare times. They learn how to say hello, phrases to be used during shopping, asking and explaining how to find an address, in daily life.

Description of language. Place and importance of language as a social aspect for a nation. Relations of language and culture. Place of Turkish among other languages in the world. Evolution of Turkish and its stages during history. Situation of Turkish today and its impact areas. Sound properties of Turkish language and rules on its linguistic sound structure. Syllables and their types. Auxiliaries and their kinds. Noun and verb conjugation. Grammar and punctuation.

 

MİM 401 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IV (4+8) 8

Experiencing a design process based on a sensitive approach to complexities of architectural space, function, form, and society in the city fabric and in contextual relations, and acquiring technical skills of structural and constructional problems in parallel. Representation of final designs in 1/100, 1/50 and 1/20 scale drawings and models.

 

MİM 405 COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN II (2+0) 2

Improvement of students’’ skills in representing their designs in 3D computer modeling. Instructions about Autocad and 3D Studio programs.

 

MİM 407 HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE III (3+0) 3

Explaining how culture of civilizations and their art and architecture relate to each other. Islamic, Seljuk, Sultanates, Early, Classical, and Late periods of Ottoman Architecture, Republican Period Architecture.

 

MİM 409 SURVEYING TECHNIQUES (2+2) 3

Introduction of principles and methods on preservation and renovation of architectural examples with historic values. Architectural environment, architectural heritage, concept of preservation, principles of preservation, authorities of preservation. Measuring techniques and building survey.

 

MİM 410 BUILDING SCIENCE I (2+0) 2

Physical quantities in climatic environments. Heat transfer in building components and resulting movements. Heat isolation. Evaluation of environmental factors affecting indoor climatic conditions. Precautions against environmental factors and relevant standards. Rules to be considered during design process for less energy consumption. Aspects to be considered for fire protection. Methods and problems of solar control. Precautions against water and moisture. Types of isolation/insulation. Physical quantities relevant to acoustics, protection from sound and sound-proof solutions. Appropriate architectural forms considering acoustics. Sound-proof materials and relevant standards.

Speaking English with appropriate terminology, pronunciation, and intonation in business life. Ability to understand what is presented in professional environments. Being able to write in professional matters. Being able to understand written materials related to professional subjects.

Words, their types, and groups. Sentence structure: Components, types and analysis. General information of composition writing and examination of examples. Written forms of expressions: official ones like petitions, reports, business letters, curriculum vitae, and other forms such as articles, papers, etc. Reading and evaluating world classics and classics of Turkish language.

 

MİM 501 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN V (4+8) 8

Experiencing a design process, resulting in architectonic transformations through a sensitive approach to complexities of architectural space, function, form, and society in the city fabric. Prioritizing a place and context relation, that also helps to acquire technical skills of structural and constructional problems in parallel. Representation of the final designs in 1/200 scale drawings and models.

 

MİM 507 HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE IV (3+0) 3

The course concentrates on contemporary ideas and examples of architecture. It focuses on presenting approaches in 20th century architecture, understandings described as Modernism, Late-Modernism, and Post Modernism.

 

MİM 509 PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS / ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION (2+0) 2

Application procedures for building registration. Theoretical information on restoration, restitution, and conservation of architectural examples and settlement textures which have conservation value. Presentation of such cases through examination of examples and site visits.

 

MİM 510 BUILDING SCIENCE II (2+0) 2

Introduction to various construction technologies. Explanations on construction process. Knowledge on construction site. Traditional construction systems. Introduction of general properties of wooden, steel, reinforced concrete buildings and building components. Introduction to construction site machinery. General information about precast prefabrication. Applications and exercises about finding the right dimensions of wood, steel, reinforce concrete, precast, prefabricated buildings and building components.

 

MİM 511 THEORIES OF URBAN PLANNING (2+0) 2

Information to city, city planning, processes of urban planning and use of city scape. Introduction and discussions related to the theoretical approaches in the area.

 

YD 501 BUSINESS ENGLISH II (2+0) 2

Speaking English clearly with proper terminology and expressions in business relations. Being able to understand the message conveyed by the speaker with normal speech speed. Writing with proper grammar and according to what is aimed. Being able to read in English, understand what the text means, and develop relevant vocabulary.

 

MİM 601 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN VI (4+8) 8

Architectural space, function and form relations, in a design problem covering social complexities, including functional and spatial differences, questioning old and new settlements. Architecture and city relations, resulting in architectonic transformations, which is based on a sensitive approach to place and context relations, also helping to acquire technical skills to solve structural and constructional problems. Representation of the final designs in 1/200 and 1/500 scale drawings and models.

 

MİM 611 URBAN DESIGN (1+3) 3

Application of theoretical knowledge on a specific town or on a district of a city, and developing a project in 1/5000, 1/25000 scale.

 

MİM 612 STRUCTURAL DESIGN (2+2) 3

Design practices to improve upon structure courses taken in previous semesters. Choice of an appropriate structural system in building design process. Structure systems from past to present. Systems of load bearing walls, skeleton systems, folded plates and shell structures, suspended structures, pneumatic systems, space frames.

 

MİM 701 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN VII (4+8) 8

Architectural space, function and form relations, in a design problem covering advanced level social complexities, including functional and spatial differences, questioning old and new settlements and architecture and city relations, that are resulting in architectonic transformations, and based on a sensitive approach to place and context relations. Also developing to acquire technical skills to solve structural and constructional problems. Representation of the final designs in 1/1000, 1/500 and 1/200 scale drawings and models.

 

MİM 713 ARCHITECTURAL THEORY (4+0) 4

Taking the concept of architecture into consideration with its mental dimensions as it constitutes the subject of design. Examination of architects’ thoughts in their texts rather than their buildings. Carrying out historical research necessitating from the need of a theoretical questioning in architecture together with its being a methodology.

 

MİM 814 GRADUATION PROJECT (4+4) 6

Reaching to a final design as a result of a design problem which reflects all theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the architectural education period, and conceptual abilities in relation to space. Function and form, also includes old and new settlements together, which shows sensitivities towards complexities of city and architecture relations, etc. and matches all with advanced structural and constructional knowledge, including presentation of technical skills with architectonic transformations, which can display architectural expression and architectural qualities.

 

MİM 815 GRADUATION PROJECT RESEARCH (4+0) 4

Methods of data collection and evaluation, acquiring knowledge, carrying out case studies, examination of programs and settlement pattern analysis, constitution of a theoretical framework for graduation projects. Carrying out a research in parallel to graduation project, and submission of visual as well as printed presentations.

Taking economy and management issues into consideration during planning, design, construction, and occupation phases. Factors affecting building costs. Socio-economic and technical factors in building costs. Description and analysis of unit prices. Techniques of quantity surveying. Management during construction and post-occupancy phases. Concepts and explanations regarding construction law. Site selection criteria and purchasing the site. Preparation of the project. Finding the necessary funding. Taking permits for construction. Employing a construction team. Buildings without construction permits or buildings cheating with the given permits. Duration of construction permits, temporary permits, occupancy permits. Procedures for unification or division of sites. Rules and regulations related to construction and buildings. Procedures and laws for open tender. Starting off the construction activity and organization in a construction site.
