Why Architecture

Cities present themselves to make cultures dwell in them, and to be reshaped by these cultures. City, which is one of the most comprehensive and concrete signs of culture, is in a mutual and uninterrupted dialog with architecture. This dialog flourishes from all ways of technological, economic, and political developments, and events of nature and environment. Architectural education authorities in a city have a direction giving impact on this dialog.

Other than being a profession, whose product can be reduced to “space” with a pragmatic look, architecture is rather a way of thinking and a way of life. This necessitates continuous learning, knowledge refreshment, and personal discoveries. It can hardly be possible to educate students of architecture with such desired consciousness, through a stereotyped and purely passive university education. Nuh Naci Yazgan University, aims at establishing its Architecture Department within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, and gives priority to institutional and spatial connections of architecture with its naturally related discipline; “art”. This approach is important as it reflects the differences from the other existing or planned to be launched Architecture Departments in Kayseri.

As architecture is not a branch of normative sciences, its relative distance from arts and positive sciences make education at each architecture school different, in other words it prepares the ground for differing schools of thoughts in architectural education. Nuh Naci Yazgan University, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture takes its role focusing on “DESIGN”, in considerations with the contemporary developments and anticipations of the city. Moving from the point that, having a very wide area of interest and wide knowledge base, architecture’s main activity is designing, therefore it is anticipated that it will prepare the background for all relevant disciplines. This main objective is reflected in the whole curriculum that all courses are made like tools through which students are introduced to necessary equipment for them to improve design abilities. It is intended that the students become aware of sources of knowledge, ways of analytical and critical thinking, and start recognizing the needs like researching and continuously renewing their knowledge.

The curriculum of Nuh Naci Yazgan University, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture is prepared according to international standards and through critical evaluations of curricula of architectural schools in Turkey and Europe, so that its graduates can compete, not only at city/regional scale, but with national and international professionals in their area. They become considerate to environment, and also are aware of their cultural values and conscious enough to protect these values, respecting ethical values, and can define their own identity, as well as being able to carry the society they belong to further ahead with the unique solutions they can offer.
